Office for Mac Installation and Activation Guide: Microsoft 365 and Office LTSC 2021
If you want to install Office on a Mac, two questions come up again and again. First, do Microsoft 365 for Mac and Office LTSC 2021 for Mac use the same installer? Second, what is the proper way to activate Office after installation?
This guide puts the common paths in one place and only covers official Microsoft downloads and legitimate licensing methods. No third-party serializer packages, cracks, or license bypass tools are included.
Download and Install
Microsoft 365 for Mac and Office LTSC 2021 for Mac use the same Office for Mac installer. The main difference is the license, not the installer package itself.
There are two common official ways to install it:
- If you already have a Microsoft 365 account or an account with an Office license attached, sign in and install from your Microsoft account.
- If you just need the latest Office for Mac installer package, you can also use Microsoft's direct installer link.
Useful official entry points:
After downloading, open Microsoft Office installer.pkg and follow the prompts.
Activation
How Office for Mac activates depends on the license you actually own.
1. Microsoft 365
If you use Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Family, or a work or school Microsoft 365 subscription assigned to you, just open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint after installation and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the license.
In most cases:
- Personal plans use a personal Microsoft account.
- Business or education plans use a work or school account.
- Once sign-in succeeds, Office validates the subscription and activates automatically.
2. Office LTSC 2021 for Mac
Office LTSC 2021 for Mac is not the normal path for most retail personal users. It is mainly intended for eligible volume licensing customers.
If your organization bought Office LTSC 2021, the usual process is:
- Install the Office for Mac apps first.
- Have an admin download the matching
Volume License (VL) Serializerfrom the Microsoft 365 admin center or Microsoft-Office-For-MacOS. - Run
Microsoft_Office_LTSC_2021_VL_Serializer.pkgon the target Mac to apply the volume license.
Microsoft's official documentation is here:
Switching from Microsoft 365 to Office LTSC 2021
Sometimes a Mac was previously activated with a Microsoft 365 subscription, but later needs to use an organization's Office LTSC 2021 volume license instead. In that case, the normal approach is to remove the old license state first and then apply the new one.
The process is usually:
- Use Microsoft's official License Removal Tool or the official cleanup instructions.
- Reopen Office and confirm the old subscription license is no longer being used.
- Have the admin run the correct
VL Serializer.

What to Do If Activation Fails
If you are using a legitimate license but Office still does not activate, these are the most common things to check.
1. Old license data is still on the Mac
This is especially common if the Mac was previously signed in with another Microsoft 365 account or switched between different Office license types.
In that case, remove the old license state first, then sign in again or rerun the admin-provided serializer.
2. You signed in with the wrong account
Microsoft 365 activation is account-based. If you sign in with the wrong Microsoft account, Office may install correctly but remain unactivated.
Double-check:
- The email address you signed in with.
- Whether that account actually has an active Microsoft 365 license.
- Whether you mixed up a personal account and a work account.
3. Office background licensing components are not working correctly
In some cases, Office licensing components do not behave correctly and activation stays stuck. Good first steps are:
- Restart the Mac.
- Remove old licenses and sign in again.
- Update Office for Mac to a current supported version.
- If this is a managed enterprise Mac, ask the admin to verify the deployment and license assignment flow.
Is Office 2019 for Mac Still Worth Using
If you are still looking into Office 2019 for Mac or Office 2016 for Mac, there is one date that matters:
Microsoft support for Office 2019 and Office 2016 ended on October 14, 2025.
That means as of June 9, 2026, it usually makes more sense to move to:
Microsoft 365Office LTSC 2021- or a newer supported long-term Office release
Summary
On macOS, the important part is not just finding an installer that works. The real key is understanding which license type you should use:
- If you have
Microsoft 365, install Office and sign in with the licensed account. - If your organization uses
Office LTSC 2021, deploy the official MicrosoftVL Serializerthrough the proper volume licensing workflow. - If activation fails, clean up old license files first, then verify the account, license type, and deployment source.
