Switching from Microsoft 365 to Office LTSC 2021

Sometimes a Mac was previously activated with a Microsoft 365 subscription, but later needs to use an organization's Office LTSC 2021 volume license instead. In that case, the normal approach is to remove the old license state first and then apply the new one.

The process is usually:

  1. Use Microsoft's official License Removal Tool or the official cleanup instructions.
  2. Reopen Office and confirm the old subscription license is no longer being used.
  3. Have the admin run the correct VL Serializer.

What to Do If Activation Fails

If you are using a legitimate license but Office still does not activate, these are the most common things to check.

1. Old license data is still on the Mac

This is especially common if the Mac was previously signed in with another Microsoft 365 account or switched between different Office license types.

In that case, remove the old license state first, then sign in again or rerun the admin-provided serializer.

2. You signed in with the wrong account

Microsoft 365 activation is account-based. If you sign in with the wrong Microsoft account, Office may install correctly but remain unactivated.

Double-check:

  • The email address you signed in with.
  • Whether that account actually has an active Microsoft 365 license.
  • Whether you mixed up a personal account and a work account.

3. Office background licensing components are not working correctly

In some cases, Office licensing components do not behave correctly and activation stays stuck. Good first steps are:

  1. Restart the Mac.
  2. Remove old licenses and sign in again.
  3. Update Office for Mac to a current supported version.

Is Office 2019 for Mac Still Worth Using

If you are still looking into Office 2019 for Mac or Office 2016 for Mac, there is one date that matters:

Microsoft support for Office 2019 and Office 2016 ended on October 14, 2025.

That means as of June 9, 2026, it usually makes more sense to move to:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Office LTSC 2021
  • or a newer supported long-term Office release
